Let’s say you have quality content on your site. And you know how to do on-page SEO. You need starting boost in links pointing to your site, so people can find you and talk about your content? Here are some of the things that I do to get backlinks for my site:
1. Forum signatures
I have bunch of messages on couple of forums across the internet. I regularly put links of site that I promote in signature and keep them there for at least 6 months. Google probably can recognize sig links and devaluate them, but they helps. Every link helps, even no follow links helps.
2. Forum discussions
After finishing a site, I find some appropriate niche forums and start thread about site, asking people to comments, give advices and their thoughts. People like to be smart ass-as and tend to reply if you want to hear them.
3. Do Follow Blog commenting
There is bunch of do follow blogs around with very high page ranks. They have bunch of posts with just a few comments and with also high page rank. Use Google to find few lists, pick the relevant and start commenting. When posting a comment, try to add some value don’t post just excellent post, Thank you and similar posts. They will not be approved. Try to enter into discussion. If you can’t, then better don’t post at all. (more…)
It looks I am back on the top in the Sulumits Retsambew contest. I was really in heart breaking situation 
. Anyway there is next strange situation. I dropped to third place yesterday, and last night I worked on blog, since I wanted to add last blog post to first page via Mini Loop, but when I added I did not liked how it came up, and I removed it. That version of the frontpage was maybe 30 seconds up. However Murphy happened, and Google bot indexed my page just in time when my post was on first page (click on cached version of my site bellow my Google result). Almost instantly I was moved up for one position above the wwe_fan9417 place. But Sunita was still on the top.
I went to sleep. Now I just woke up and see that I am on first page, but my site still is not indexed, and I am first ranked. Can it be that Google more like regularly refreshed frontpage, then static one? It looks it is better that blog is on the front page then on some under located page.
I will wait to see what will happen when Google realize that I removed additional content. If that came bad, I will consider making my first page as a blog and merging about and frontpage pages. Other changes are again not big. Only webmaster stimulus on some org domain came up on first page on position 9.
I just lost my first position in the Sulumits Retsambew contest. I had feeling of invincibility, so this is actually good. Better lose places now, then 5 days before the end of the content. Last 2 days I almost did not do anything and punishment was quick and harsh. Fall from first, to third place. Sunita become no1. And that strange guy on Wordpress without links is now second. There are no significant changes for lower places. I noticed that there is no Slideshare entry no the sixth place (by Sunita), so it looks like Slideshare is very authoritative site. Probably until end of the day, will publish one slide of my own to support my contestant entry.
Day 7 on Sulumits Retsambew and nothing seriously changed. We are still holding the first place. My favorite „enemy webmaster“, Sunita (ChillingBreeze) from India is still on the second place. We had a great conversation, and I realized that I am facing serious opponent with, a lot of knowledge and will. I adopted strategy changes because of her 
. She has less backlinks then me, but her entry have a bunch of strong links from article directories.
Afzalkhan loosed position because of wordpress hosted guy. Quite strange situation, since I don’t see any backlinks for 2sulumitsretsambew and the guy is almost without content.
Few new web 2.0 pages appeared on the first page, but I predict that they will not have breath for longer treks: D
Google now show there are 3800 pages for Sulumits Retsambew term and 7250 for sulumitsretsambew. Most of them are links that support contestant entries, and I think there is no more then 100 contestants in this moment.
Around Google SERP 8 and bellow I noticed few interesting new contestants.
My strategy change in Sulumits Retsambew race is not big.
I just decided that I will enter with all my links I can get as soon as possible, since I am sure that Google add value to the age of the backlinks. However that can be double sided knife. It is very easy, that with too much links getting daily Google might consider this as a spam. This is also questionable, since on that way your opponents would ruin your business to much easily.

After showing my contest entry to my girlfriend, she noticed somewhere on the page term SERP. I know you all know what SERP is, but there are plenty of other webmasters that maybe don’t.
SERP is acronym for term Search Engine Results Page. Some people wrongly refer, as Search Engine Result Position. It is basically search results page returned to you by the search engine, for given term (red colored area on the image bellow). Given results page can contain other elements such as sponsored listing (in our given case from google.com, we can see adwords listings in the blue area, above the SERP results). Many search engines cache their results for better performance. SERP refreshing can take significant amount of times, in some cases it needs to pass few days or even few weeks before SERP is refreshed, so don’t worry if you don’t see any fast changes.
How these SERPs are generated?
They are generated according to relevance and page worth in search engine eyes. Algorithms for determining page relevancy are almost always well kept secret. But if you stick with this formula you can’t fail:
Good original content + healthy and good links = Good position.
This means that you need to write content for people, not search engines. Good original content will give you visitors, visitors will spread word about you and they will help you to get healthy and good links. Bunch of links will mean that people talk about you, and that will give you worth and authority in the search engine eyes.
